Three-dimensional topological photonic crystal with a single surface Dirac cone

چکیده
A single Dirac cone on the surface is the hallmark of three-dimensional (3D) topological insulators, where the double degeneracy at the Dirac point is protected by time-reversal symmetry and the spin-splitting away from the point is provided by the spin-orbital coupling. Here we predict a single Dirac-cone surface state in a 3D photonic crystal, where the degeneracy at the Dirac point is protected by a nonsymmorphic glide reflection and the linear splitting away from it is enabled by breaking time-reversal symmetry. Such a gapless surface state is fully robust against random disorder of any type. This bosonic topological band structure is achieved by applying alternating magnetization to gap out the 3D “generalized Dirac points” discovered in the bulk of our crystal. The Z2 bulk invariant is characterized through the evolution of Wannier centers. Our proposal—readily realizable using ferrimagnetic materials at microwave frequencies—can also be regarded as the photonic analog of topological crystalline insulators, providing the first 3D bosonic symmetry-protected topological system.

Coexistence of topological Dirac fermions on the surface and three-dimensional Dirac cone state in the bulk of ZrTe5 single crystal
Although, the long-standing debate on the resistivity anomaly in ZrTe5 somewhat comes to an end, the exact topological nature of the electronic band structure remains elusive till today. Theoretical calculations predicted that bulk ZrTe5 to be either a weak or a strong three-dimensional (3D) topological insulator. However, the angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy and transport measurements...
متن کاملSymmetry-protected topological photonic crystal in three dimensions
Topology of electron wavefunctions was first introduced to characterize the quantum Hall states in two dimensions discovered in 1980 (ref. 1). Over the past decade, it has been recognized that symmetry plays a crucial role in the classification of topological phases, leading to the broad notion of symmetry-protected topological phases2. As a primary example, topological insulators3,4 are distin...
متن کاملComposite Dirac liquids: parent states for symmetric surface topological order
We introduce exotic gapless states—‘composite Dirac liquids’—that can appear at a strongly interacting surface of a three-dimensional electronic topological insulator. Composite Dirac liquids exhibit a gap to all charge excitations but nevertheless feature a single massless Dirac cone built from emergent electrically neutral fermions. These states thus comprise electrical insulators that, inter...

Optics played a key role in the discovery of geometric phase. Once again, it joins the journey of exploring topological physics, bringing us bosonic topological states of one-way waveguides, Weyl points and a single surface Dirac cone. At the interfaces of topological photonic materials, the propagation of photons is protected against disorder by the momentum-space topologies in the bulk. Topol...

Three-dimensional Dirac semimetals, three-dimensional analogues of graphene, are unusual quantum materials with massless Dirac fermions, which can be further converted to Weyl fermions by breaking time reversal or inversion symmetry. Topological surface states with Fermi arcs are predicted on the surface and have been observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments. Although t...
